Migration and Development News Roundup – July 31, 2011
Along the past week here are some interesting news relating to youth and migration and development. I came across. News about the recent food crises –a rather unpopular area I find interest in was also a striking issue to feel concern about:
- Regional conference on migration in Africa opens
- UK opens its doors to exceptionally talented migrants
- Issues and Challenges Of Female Labour Migration
- In the US, Senators Push for High-skill Immigration Reform
- Kenyans in Diaspora respond to famine
- Gulf expats put remittances on hold
- The Recession and ‘Return Migration’
- Africa: Overhauling Migration Governance to Promote Human Rights And Justice
- Failure to Invest in Young People ‘a False Economy’, Secretary-General Tells General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Youth
- Somalia Africa Food Crisis Deadly Yet Quiet – The Daily Beast
Following the news about immigration reforms by the developed world towards attracting more high skilled labour migrants, I rather think there is the need for a fair negotiation and balanced approach that is based on the pros and cons of such actions for sending countries. The disadvantages of such reforms for most sending countries can worsen their development path through brain drain. It is important to thus ensure that these reforms are carried out to ensure return migration or circular migration that can benefit both the migrants, their country of origin and host country.
